Rice Krispie Treats - Holiday Style

Many of you will know that my little girl likes helping in the kitchen.  It's a bit tricky here, when there are huge pans of boiling water to cook lobster and crab, or a hot grill for mackerel.  So sometimes, after a few weeks on holiday in Brittany, she is really desperate to "cook".

This morning we, once again, had leaden skies, and  as she sat reading the cereal packet, she asked: "Can we make Chocolate Rice Krispies, Please?", how could I refuse.  I quickly checked my old, tried and tested recipe, Chocolate Crackle Cakes, here.

But I have no Golden Syrup here in Brittany! Oh! NO! What could I do?

I looked in my food cupboard, I had the rice krispies, (she'd been eating them for breakfast, of course!)
I had a bar of lovely milky Lindt chocolate and I had...... NUTELLA?

Well it was worth a try:-

Summer Holiday Rice Krispie Treats

1 bar good quality milk chocolate
2 dessertspoonfuls Nutella
1 (good sized) bowl of Rice Krispies

Break the chocolate into squares

Heat in a Bain Marie (or measuring jug), over a pan of hot water

Add 2 goodish spoonfuls of Nutella

Continue to stir, until the chocolate is fully melted

Pour the chocolate mixture over the Rice Krispies, and stir really well

Fill mini cake cases (or a pie dish) with the chocolate/Rice Krispie mixture

Pop in the fridge for at least an hour,

See how long they will last.

*this made 25 mini silicone cake cases (I had had the foresight to bring them with me!) But it would also make a lovely refrigerator cake, to be cut into portions once cold!

The ingredients, (in most holiday cupboards?)

Small hands breaking the chocolate

Adults only, melt the chocolate

Two spoonfuls of this (YUM!)

Again, adults only, mix together

My little girl mixing the rice krispies and chocolate

Put into cup cases
(make sure there are lots of spare spoons- there is some sampling going on!)

Into the fridge (for an hour or more)

Total Perfection!

It's great fodder for bathing parties, we went swimming in the afternoon and my little girl and her little friend ate 6 in a matter of moments!

NB I did make this recipe up this morning, on the spur of the moment.  I am sure someone else has come up with this combination before, but I have never seen it.

Do give them a try, my husband, my younger son and my little girl all say they are tastier then the original recipe, and soooo much easier!  We may well be making them at home, although the nuts in the Nutella, mean they couldn't be sent to school.  So a weekend or play date treat only!

  7. WLM, I'm sure she'll love cooking soldiers of tasty treats with you.
Tina, I would normally use dark chocolate at home, but used the milk because it was all we had, and it worked well.
